The College is owned by the Religious of Jesus and Mary and part of the Registered Charity number 247358.  Thornton College is part of the worldwide network of Jesus and Mary educational establishments.  The final responsibility of Thornton College rests with the Trustees of the Charity.

The seven Trustees of the charity are predominantly from the Religious of Jesus and Mary.  These Trustees are:

Sr Helen M Haigh RJM – Chair of Trustees

Sr Claudine Donovan RJM

Sr Brenda Kilbride RJM

Sr Carmen Aymar RJM

Sr Joan Hunter RJM

Sr Gerarda Lawler RJM

Fr Mervyn Williams SDB

The Trustees appoint Governors to support and protect Thornton College and assist the Trustees in the general direction of the College.  Governors have delegated powers, with no liability, and they form the Governing Board.  Currently there are twelve Governors and a Clerk to the Governors.  The College is a member of the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS).  The Trustees entrust the running of the College to the Headteacher who, with the Governors maintains and furthers its ethos and educational philosophy. Governors’ meetings are attended by the Governors, the Executive Team of the College (Headteacher, the Deputy Head and the Bursar), and the Trustees; Governors support the Headteacher and the Executive Team and are, with them, accountable to the Trustees.

The College has four Governing Board meetings a year, usually in September, November, March and June; these meetings are preceded by training sessions when required.

There are three Governors’ Committees: Curriculum & Personnel, Ethos and Finance & General Purposes; these committees each meet a minimum of 3 times a year and are often preceded by relevant talks by staff from the College.   The Committees feed back to the Governing Board at each meeting.

A nominated Governor is responsible for Safeguarding & Boarding.  This appointed Governor visits the school each term, to review safeguarding procedures, the implementation of the policy and to meet with Boarders and the Boarding Team; a report is fed back to the Governing Board at each meeting.

The Trustees appoint the Headteacher, Bursar and Deputy Head.  All other appointments are made by the Head in consultation with the Executive Team; a Governor is involved in the interview process of all teaching staff and senior appointments.

Sr Helen Haigh, the Chair of Governors, can be contacted by writing a letter to the school or by email to chair@thorntoncollege.com.

Mrs Jane Sanders, Bursar, is the Clerk to the Governors and can be contacted at bursar@thorntoncollege.com.
