Sport is a vital and exciting part of life at Thornton College. We believe that sport is essential in nurturing skills, confidence, a spirit of fair play and a lifelong love of sporting activities.
We strongly believe in promoting a ‘sport for all’ ethos, fostering a positive attitude towards health, fitness and physical recreation. All girls participate in Physical Education as part of the curriculum. These lessons are delivered by well-qualified staff who are keen to help the girls achieve their full potential.
Excellent sporting facilities include an Astroturf, netball and tennis courts and hockey pitches, sports hall, expressive arts studio and a swimming pool. This allows the department to offer a broad and balanced curriculum.
Girls experience a wide range of activities such as the traditional team games, gymnastics, dance, health related fitness, badminton, athletics and swimming.
In Years 10 and 11, the girls enjoy an even greater variety of activities. These include trampolining, table tennis, golf and fitness sessions at a local fitness centre. Our sporting programme is very busy with extensive extra-curricular activities and fixtures. We encourage healthy inter-house competition culminating in the annual sports day event.
We now offer Physical Education as a GCSE subject as a response to pupils' demand to pursue PE at a higher level.
