Two major development projects have been completed at Thornton over the summer.
Firstly, we have refurbished our school dining room. This is a project which has been planned for some time and has only been made possible with a Capital Investment opportunity from Harrison Catering, (our caterers). We have a brand new state of the art servery including hot and cold pudding and theatre stations. There is also a new central cold salad bar station and separate cold water station. Girls have a mixture of seating areas including small and large circular and square tables as well as long bench tables. The new dining area is vibrant, bright and colourful and a real asset for the girls as they return to school.
Secondly, we have converted The Villas, located on the school grounds next to the Orchard, into one boarding house for our Year 13 boarders and Miss Smith, a member of our Boarding team. Boarding numbers at Thornton. especially in Years 11, 12 and 13, have increased and we do like to provide single study bedrooms for our girls in Years 11 -13. Converting existing residential accommodation is the most cost effective progression which will allow Year 13 students the opportunity for more independence in preparation for their transition to university or whatever their chosen pathway may be, while still providing the support and guidance they all need throughout their final year.
The Villa is now a beautiful home with single study bedrooms for each girl, a communal kitchen and access to a washing machine! Ian Wheatley, Thornton’s Catering Manager, is planning to work with the girls to share some tips on how they can cater for themselves in the next phase of their lives.
