Earlier in the week when many minds were focussed on Presidential changes in the US, we were delighted to welcome Mike Cook from Ernst & Young, as part of our Spotlight Careers programme.
Mike’s career has been shaped by his experience working for the British Government. He has spent time working for the Ministry of Defence, Home Office and Northern Ireland Office and he clearly explained about the different tiers of HMG, ranging from Legislators and Diplomats in Central Government to planners on Thornton Parish Council in Local Government.
Birmingham has the biggest local council in Europe and Mike touched on the important services that local councils deliver for residents. He stressed that there are job roles in the Government and Civil Service for everyone, not just those interested in History and Politics.
When thinking about careers, the most important driver is what do you enjoy doing the most? His grounding with the government has led to roles with other businesses such as Kier and Ernst & Young.
Mike has come to realise that for him, it is helping others which has been the common theme in his professional life.
