Thornton College is a wonderfully diverse school and has a student led Equalities Committee working on raising awareness, embedding best practise, and sustaining equality across all age groups.
For Black History Month 2023, the Equalities Committee have concentrated their efforts on the theme #Saluting Our Sisters. They launched an internal poetry competition open to all students across all age groups asking for poem submissions about their own personal experiences / women leaders past and present. On Friday 20th October they held an exhibition of women leaders and had stands of storytelling for all students across the school to visit, listen and learn about wonderful women who have inspired them.
Thornton invited DEI Industry Leaders, Precious Lwanga and Gamiel Yafai to visit the Exhibition, have lunch with the Equalities Committee students and judge the internal poetry competition, presenting the winners in a whole school assembly!
Gamiel Yafai said, “It is a privilege to be here today” and Precious Lwanga said “the poetry is of such a high standard and the students’ exhibition is amazing”.
Ms Wilks, Deputy Head, Thornton College said “Today has been simply wonderful! Our Equalities Committee students have led this project and, in arranging an exhibition about women leaders who inspire them, they have shared their learning and stories with every other student in the school. They are truly remarkable role models and we all, students and staff, have learned and gained a lot from today. Thank you too to Precious and Gamiel for giving their time today to judge our poetry competition which I know would have been hard as the standard was so high! Congratulations to all involved in our ‘Women Who Lead – Saluting our Sisters’ event today”.
