Year 9 students had the privilege of welcoming Pam Haigh, General Manager of Buckingham based charity, Ripple Africa, to Thornton College to share fascinating insights into the impactful projects Ripple Africa is spearheading in Malawi.
The highlight of Pam’s talk was the Fish Conservation Project in Lake Malawi, which captivated our students. The girls learned how over-fishing has decimated fish stocks in the world’s most biodiverse lake and how Ripple Africa are educating local fishermen on sustainable fishing practices. Fishermen are now using nets with larger holes to allow baby fish to escape and grow bigger so that they can go on to breed and increase the overall number of fish in the lake. They are also protecting key breeding areas, which has attracted new birds and vegetation to the lake.
We are incredibly grateful to Pam for her visit and inspiring presentation. Excitingly, Mrs. Readman is already considering a potential trip to Malawi to see these projects firsthand!
